Cape Town Southern Suburbs

Claremont Wynberg Pinelands Rondebosch

Cape Town's Southern Suburbs lie to the Southeast of the slopes of Table Mountain within rich valleys and vast plains reaching from just south of the Table Bay industrial neighbourhoods in the north to the False Bay coastal suburbs and the Cape Peninsula cliffs to the south, and are crossed North-South by the M5 and M3 motorways.

HISTORY: Nomadic Khoisan grazed their cattle on the uncultivated fields of the Cape Peninsula until the Dutch after the arrival of Jan van Riebeeck in 1652 established an outpost on the shores of Table Bay and 1730 a couple of farms one named Weltevreden, later subdivided in 1822 today known as the suburb of Claremont. In 1882 a village management board was formed, and in 1886 it was replaced by the Municipality of Claremont.

The first telephone system was installed in the early 1880’s and the railway from Cape Town to Wynberg opened in 1864. In 1913 Claremont and several other municipalities were incorporated into the city of Cape Town. The government enforced its apartheid system on Claremont in the 1960s, forcing the Coloured residents to leave. As a result, large areas of the suburb stood derelict for several years until the early 1970’s, when commercial development began.

A major shopping mall, named Cavendish Square, was opened in 1973, and other shopping centres followed. Today a transport-interchange and bypass road links the suburb to other Cape Town regions.

One of the oldest and most famous suburbs of Cape Town is Constantia; the estate of Groot Constantia (Great Constantia) famous for its wine was established in 1684 by Simon van der Stel, the Dutch Colonial Governor of Cape Town, and other wine farms include the oldest estate Steenberg (mountain of stone) established in 1682, Buitenverwachting (beyond expectatiions), Klein Constantia (Small Constantia) and Constantia Uitsig (view of Constantia) proves to be a major tourist attraction with its own wine route.

British nobles such as Charles Spencer, the 9th Earl of Spencer, brother of Princess Diana as well as Margaret Thatcher and her son Mark amongst others lived in Constantia.
